Janeane Garofalo as 'Teena'Another Southland Tales character who got short-changed in the film was General Teena MacArthur. As the “system test administrator for the Utopia Three project”, it was basically her job to baby-sit the crispy corpse found in Boxer Santaros’s burned out vehicle… but, being a curious sort, she wasn’t prepared to simply look the other way, and began her own investigation into the identity of the fallen “soldier” in her custody. In the original 160 minute cut of the film that Kelly took to Cannes Film Festival in 2006, she was played by Janeane Garofalo and apparently had several proper scenes… but, for various boring business reasons, the film was trimmed down before it saw a general release, and poor MacArthur hit the cutting room floor. Kelly has said that if there’s ever a call for it, then he’d be happy to release a longer cut… but I’m not sure there are enough Garofalo fans like me around to make that happen. As it is, we have to make do with a very brief glimpse of her looking rather glam in her fatigues alongside Justin Timberlake, in the finale party scene.

The “Cannes Cut” is floating about the web and can be torrented. I wouldn’t recommend it though. Not only is it apparently illegal (that’s me safe from the polis) but is a bloody awful film. Even worse than the trimmed down released version. Ms G’s role is very short.

Shame. There are some really good jokes and ideas and people in that movie, so I was kinda hoping there might be a version out there that lived up to its potential. :(
