Jumping The Buzzsharks

Tiffany Stevenson on "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" (12/2011)Music-themed-panel-game-quiz-show-thingy Never Mind the Buzzcocks has been circling the drain, in terms of hilarity and relevance, ever since Simon Amstell retired as official host, to pursue a career in “acting”. They’ve tried to keep things interesting by wheeling in a different celebrity “guest host” every week, but sadly the show’s biting, irreverent edge has long been blunted by stilted teleprompter readings and pleb-dazzle pandering. Normally I wouldn’t touch this show’s mouldering corpse with a ten foot pole, but this week my TV guide informed me that Tiffany “Tiff” Stevenson (of Show Me The Funny fame) would be one of the guest panellists… so I gritted my teeth, swallowed my pride, and programmed my recorder accordingly.

Considering her relative obscurity, I was pleasantly surprised by how feisty and outspoken Tiff was during the various rounds, and I thought she got a few good jokes in, even if the biggest laughs of the night were provided by a creepy-lookin’ character comic with a carrier bag full of bric-a-brac. If nothing else, she got plenty of screen time, and her outfit looked fantastic (click here to see a little backstage footage of her showing off her fancy nails and skull ring). Meanwhile, my stats counter suggests there’s been a significant spike in the number of people Googling her name, so clearly it’s helped to raise her profile too. Hurrah!
