New(ish) Girl

Zooey Deschanel as ‘Jess Day’ in “New Girl”So, the first season of New Girl will debut on Ch4 tomorrow evening, giving Brits without internet access their first glimpse of one of the best new comedies of 2011. Meanwhile, new episodes will begin airing in the U.S. again the-week-after-next, so audiences on both sides of the Atlantic can get a much needed dose of adorkable tomfoolery. Hurrah!

One very pleasant side-effect of the Ch4 launch campaign is that they’ve been plastering billboards and busses with this super-cute image of the show’s star, Zooey Deschanel, for a couple of weeks now… even here in my crappy little backwater! Shame we can’t make the adverts a permanent fixture, so that I can stare up into those big baby blues every morning! Sigh. On the other hand, the trailers they’re running on TV seem a little off-putting, as if they’ve just slapped a bunch of random snippets together, that don’t really work out of context. And I can’t understand why they’ve chosen to strand it all alone on a Friday night, between a cookery show and a gameshow, rather than bundling it with all the other American sitcoms as part of E4’s “Funny Thursday” block. Anyone’s who’s studied basic marketing knows the importance of “The Four P’s”: Product, Price, Promotion and PLACE. Ah well, hopefully there’ll be enough good word of mouth to get people tuning in…

Oh, and I’ve almost managed to train myself to pronounce Ms. Deschanel’s first name properly too… so yay for me! [Note: It’s “Zoey” not “Zoo-eey”… don’t ask me why]
