Although Ch5 started playing crappy made-for-TV Christmas movies around mid-October (seriously!), and the supermarkets have been playing “seasonal” music for the last couple weeks, I have a strict embargo against listening to any festive tunes until the 1st of December (aka today)! According to iTunes, I have 225 tracks in my “Festive!” playlist… though I hasten to add that they aren’t all strictly Christmas-themed, and there are also several Hanukkah-related songs, including Yidcore’s highly informative “Punk Rock Chanukah Song”, “Hava Nagila (Baby Let’s Dance)” by Lauren Rose, and the South Park gang’s “Dreidel Song”!*
Recent additions include the albums Kylie Christmas (2015) by Kylie Minogue, Of Kings and Angels (2014) by Mediaeval Baebes, and Christmas With The Puppini Sisters (2010) by The Puppini Sisters… while my fave individual tracks include such perennial classics as “Christmas Without You” by Sarah Nixey, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by Rasputina, and (of course) “Give The Jew Girl Toys” by Sarah Silverman!
Sadly, this time of year can be very stressful and/or depressing for a lot of people, so regardless of your religious persuasion, I highly recommend taking the time to put on some good music, crank up your speakers, and dance your blues away!
* While “fact checking” this post, I discovered a whole album of humorous Hanukkah songs by a band called The Levees, which they’ve kindly posted on Soundcloud… hurrah!
