On Tuesday night, Babymetal made their American televisual debut via the Late Show with Stephen Colbert… and judging by the loud cheers and applause that greeted every mention of their name, I think it’s fair to say that there were already plenty fans among the studio audience before the group stepped out to perform… and hopefully they’ve attracted even more admirers across the States (and the world beyond) thanks to this wider exposure.
I’d been expecting them to do a track off the new album, Metal Resistance (presumably “Karate“, since that was the sorta-lead-single), but they actually chose to go with the tried-and-true “Gimme Chocolate!!” from their first, self-titled album instead. The girls gave a typically energetic and adorable performance, and their co-ordinated sign-off-and-sashay was a nice capper too… though sadly the official YouTube video fades-out before that. Boo! For his part, Colbert repeatedly plugged their record, and even kept their logo up on the screens behind him, as he said his own farewells… the sight of which also elicited a surprisingly enthusiastic response from the crowd (though, to be fair, it is a pretty cheer-worthy logo!)
Meanwhile, Metal Resistance has scored the No. 15 spot on the official UK album chart, making it the highest ever entry by a Japanese act… and they’ve also been nominated for “Best International Band” in Metal Hammer‘s Golden Gods awards. The winner of that category is decided by the public, so I’ve already cast my vote in their favour. Fingers crossed and fox-signs up!
