Fee-Free Friday!

Vodun circa 2/20A couple times since lockdown began, Bandcamp have announced that they’d be waiving their fees to help musicians (such as Vodun, pictured) who’ve been impacted by the sudden unexpected loss of income… but they’ve only done it for a day at a time, weeks apart, and been pretty vague about when that “day” actually began and ended. Thankfully it looks like I wasn’t the only person who was confused/annoyed by this, as they’ve now set up a countdown to the next event, which is scheduled for “June 5th” (from midnight to midnight PDT) (uh, aka 8am in the UK?). Apparently they normally take a cut of 15% for digital sales and 10% for physical merch, so this is a pretty good deal for the artists, assuming they can inform/mobilise their fan-base!

Then on “June 19th” (midnight to midnight PDT) they say they’ll be donating 100% of their share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, “a national organization that has a long history of effectively enacting racial justice and change through litigation, advocacy, and public education”… and they’ll “also be allocating an additional $30,000 per year to partner with organizations that fight for racial justice and create opportunities for people of color.” Hurrah!
